The President’s Internship

For my project, I was able to complete an internship in the President’s office here at SUU. I worked directly with President Wyatt, Provost Cook, and VP Dodge. I was able to work on a lot of finance and accounting related projects. The experience I gained is so valuable and will help me become very marketable in the job world. I also gained a lot of professional skills.
Specific tasks that my internship included were bookkeeping, balancing the President’s budget, and providing reports for the admin to verify. All of these tasks are helpful because they are related to my major. I had to get a lot of help from a few different people to be able to be proficient in these tasks. All of these things were difficult at first but once I learned the system and what I was doing I was able to complete them with ease.
The inspiration for my project came from the internship itself. Once I was offered the internship, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to do my edge project. I was immediately inspired by my supervisors and how much time and effort they put into making our school great. As I went through my internship I realized that this would give me the perfect “edge” on my classmates in the job world.
Some of the challenges I encountered was that sometimes my supervisors did not know how to do the tasks they were asking me to accomplish. So I was expected to call around campus and find someone who knew how to do it that could help me. This was challenging because I didn’t always know whom to call and I would end up calling at least 5 people before I could find the right person. Though it was challenging it was good to gain that exploratory skill. I was also able to meet a lot of people around campus which was really fun and made my job more fun.
This project was important because I was able to benefit someone else. Not only was I gaining valuable experience I was truly helping the administrators clean up the President's budget. Sometimes President Wyatt would specifically ask me to do some sort of tasks that had nothing to do with my job description however, I was able to help him directly and see the benefits of that. It felt good to make a difference in such an important office.
This project benefited me in so many ways. I learned essential accounting and finance skills that will be very helpful for me in the future. I also learned a lot of professional skills which will also really benefit me. It was so inspiring to be around so many influential people every day. I can truly state that the administrators of SUU care about the students and the school more than anyone realizes. I will forever be grateful for this amazing experience.
